Poem: Past

Written in 1999

I look around and wonder if anyone can see it, hear it, or feel it…
It’s always there, right behind me, lurking in the shadows, just waiting…
No matter how much I want it to go away, no matter how much I try to hide, it’s there…
Sometimes, I just turn a corner and I feel it against my back, breathing down my neck, whispering in my ear, “I’m still here”…
I can run away, I can run as fast as I can, but it stays right on my heels, just hanging over my head, never loosing touch from my shoulders…
It can stare me in the eyes, while everyone else is blinded beside, it is still there, but I’m the only one who knows…
The one untouchable thing that haunts me the most… my past.
